Abstract

This study aims to construct an econometric model of the export demand for Thai fresh frozen shrimps, to find the elasticities and to forecast the quantities of Thai frozen shrimps export to the major importing countries, e.g., Japan, United States, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and United Kingdom. Results showed that the coefficients of deflated Thai fresh frozen cuttlefish export price to Japan and Hong Kong, U.S. population, Australia population, deflated gross domestic product of U.S. and U.K. and the indices of export quantity of fresh frozen shrimps from India to U.S., Australia and Singapore were the significant factors affecting the export demand for Thai fresh frozen shrimps. The export demand elasticities with respect to deflated Thai fresh frozen shrimp export prices to Japan and Australia calculated at the mean value were -0.60 and -0.09 respectively. The demand elasticties of with respected to deflated Thai fresh frozen cuttlefish export prices to Japan, U.S., Singapore, Hong Kong, and U.K. calculated at the mean value were 1.02, 0.84, 4.75, 0.49 and 0.27 respectively and demand elastictities with respect to deflated gross domestic products of these countries calculated at the mean value were 1.36, 3.38, 1.97, 0.25 and 12.47 respectively. The forecast of Thai fresh frozen shrimp export to major foreign countries had the increasing trend for each country and each year during 1987 to 1991. The average quantity export of Thai fresh frozen shrimps to Japan, U.S., Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and U.K. were 11,776 tons; 10,110 tons; 3,373 tons; 2,776 tons; 1,252 tons and 1,496 tons per year repectively.
